Last week, we had the privilege of fitting a custom ankle–foot orthosis (AFO) for a patient recovering from a stroke. One of the most common challenges after a stroke is foot drop, where the foot doesn’t lift properly during walking. This can lead to tripping, instability and a loss of confidence with every step. An AFO provides the support needed to lift the foot, improve gait and make walking safer and more efficient.

A Thorough Assessment to Understand the Patient’s Needs
Every AFO we provide begins with a detailed clinical assessment. We carried out a full gait analysis to understand exactly how the stroke had affected the patient’s movement, muscle control and overall walking pattern. This ensures the device is designed to support the right areas and promote a more natural, stable gait.
Creating a Truly Custom Device
To make the AFO, we took a precise cast of the patient’s lower leg and foot. This cast forms the basis for a completely bespoke device, manufactured using specialist plastics shaped to match the patient’s anatomy. A custom AFO offers far better comfort, control, and long‑term function than an off‑the‑shelf alternative.

Fitting and Fine‑Tuning
Once the AFO was manufactured, the patient returned for a fitting appointment. We checked alignment, comfort and gait, making careful adjustments to ensure the device felt secure and supportive without causing pressure or rubbing. These small refinements make a big difference to day‑to‑day comfort and confidence.
Moving Forward With Confidence
With the new AFO in place, the patient is already walking more safely and with improved foot clearance. For many people recovering from stroke, the right orthotic support can be a key step toward regaining independence and mobility.
If you or someone you support is experiencing foot drop or walking difficulties after a neurological event, our team is here to help with expert assessment and truly bespoke orthotic solutions.
